What is C2PA?

C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is a standard for embedding provenance information in digital content. It was developed by Adobe, Microsoft, Intel, and other tech companies to help identify the origin of digital content.

When Claude generates images, it attaches C2PA metadata that says "Made with Claude." This metadata is cryptographically signed, making it tamper-evident.

How Claude Uses C2PA

According to Anthropic's announcement, Claude attaches C2PA content credentials to images and files it generates. This is different from the text watermark β€” C2PA is metadata embedded in the file itself.

C2PA vs Text Watermarks

  • C2PA: Metadata in file headers, can be stripped by removing metadata
  • Text watermark: Statistical patterns in word choices, requires rewriting
  • Both: Designed to help with EU AI Act compliance

What C2PA Contains

C2PA metadata typically includes:

  • Content credentials: "Made with Claude" label
  • Creator information: Which AI model generated the content
  • Timestamp: When the content was generated
  • Digital signature: Cryptographic proof of origin
  • Edit history: Any modifications made after generation

How to Remove C2PA Metadata

C2PA Removal Methods

1
ClaudeRewrite
One-click strip
2
ExifTool
Command-line tool
3
Online tools
Web-based removal
4
Manual editing
Re-save without metadata

Method 1: ClaudeRewrite (Recommended)

ClaudeRewrite provides one-click C2PA removal:

  1. Upload your image or file
  2. ClaudeRewrite strips all metadata (C2PA, EXIF, XMP, ICC)
  3. Download the clean file

This is the simplest and most reliable method.

Method 2: ExifTool (Advanced)

ExifTool is a command-line tool for reading and writing metadata. You can use it to strip C2PA:

exiftool -all= image.jpg

However, ExifTool requires installation and command-line knowledge.

Method 3: Online Tools

Various online tools can strip metadata from images. However, be cautious about uploading sensitive content to third-party services.

Why C2PA Matters

C2PA is becoming increasingly important because:

  • The EU AI Act requires labeling of AI-generated content
  • Platforms may start requiring C2PA credentials
  • It provides a standardized way to identify AI-generated content
  • It can affect how your content is perceived by clients and audiences
